Esophagus- allows lump of food (at this point, called a bolus) to travel from mouth to stomach; gravity helps to push along food + peristalsis- muscular, wavelike motions - sphincter (cardiac) - circular muscle - prevents the stomachs contents from creeping back up into the esophagus as the stomach contracts
