Heartburn

Causes of heartburn:

- large meals
      - cause pressure upwards
- high fat meals
      - slower to move through stomach
- obesity
- pregnancy
      - pressure from fetus
      - hormones of pregnancy slow digestive tract
- certain foods aggravate the condition
      - spicy and acidic foods
            - e.g., juices
      - alcohol

- HCl = pH 1
- orange juice = pH 4
- neutral ph = 7

To reduce pain (but not the cause):

- decrease meal size
- reduce fat intake
- stay upright after eating
- lose weight
- lessen irritants, e.g., citrus, coffee, spices, alcohol
