Stomach- bolus moves through the cardiac sphincter- stomach is stimulated to receive foods - the stomach 'grumbles' and 'growls' as the strong, muscular walls squeeze and churn the soapy mixture of food and secretions of the stomach - gastric juice - a mixture of water, enzymes and acid; - stimulated by: - food - caffeine - alcohol - spices - nerves - enzymes - are to begin breaking bonds in protein - hydrochloric acid (HCl) - kills various bacteria from food which may pose a health hazard - activates enzymes for protein digestion - chemically alters the structure of protein to make it more digestible - mucus production - protects stomach from HCl - ulcers - an erosion in the topmost, and sometimes underlying, layers of cells that form the lining of the stomach, esophagus or upper intestinal lining - cause - h. pylori (bacteria) penetrate stomach lining and produce a substance that weakens mucus - role of diet: - symptoms but not the cause can be helped by reducing intake of spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, citrus. high use of anti-acids >> harmful bacteria will pass into intestine (instead of being killed by HCl) >> more bowel problems. - food remains 2-3 hours; solids stay longer than liquids, fat longer than carbs or protein
